Centrally Adapted Optimal Control of Multiple Electric Water Heaters

Breakthroughs in smart grid technology make it possible to deliver electricity controlled and intelligent ways improve energy efficiency between the user utility. Demand-side management strategies can reduce overall usage shift consumption peak loads. Electric water heaters account for 40% of residential consumption. Since they are thermal storage devices, advanced control their efficiency. However, existing methods disregard connection grid. We propose a centrally adapted model that allows coordinated scheduling adapt optimal schedule each EWH, spreading load into off-peak periods ensure grid’s generation capacity is not exceeded. consider two delivery hot water: temperature matching, matching with Legionella sterilisation, compare them baseline strategy where thermostat always switched on. Simulation results 77 EWHs showed an unconstrained 1.05 kW/EWH be reduced as low 0.4 achieve median saving per EWH 0.38 kWh/day 0.64 strategy, without reducing user’s comfort.
